These statuesque birds can be found across the U.S., often seen standing silently along inland rivers, wetlands, and lake shores. Growing up, we had a nesting colony in the Big Woods across our county road, and seeing those unmistakable slow wing beats of herons flying by will always be a fond sight for me.
This bird is dedicated to Mary Rieger, a devoted field biologist who spent over 30 years working with Great Blue Herons and other native birds and plants. Throughout her career, and working with birds long after her retirement, Mary was known for wearing her iconic large-brimmed straw sun hat in the field.
